Maine has one of the most straightforward medical cannabis programs in the country, and most people looking into it are surprised by how few hoops there are. No qualifying conditions list. No state office to register with. For most people it's a five-minute phone call and you're done the same day.

Why the medical side is worth it

Maine's medical program is where the craft is. That's not marketing — it's a structural thing about how the two sides of the market are built.

• Small growers and real variety. The medical side is where the caregivers are: operations small enough that someone knows every batch by hand. You get cultivars and concentrates that never make it to a retail shelf, because the runs are too small to be worth a big operation's time.

• You can talk to the person who grew it. Ask how something was dried, what went into the soil, when it came down — and get a real answer instead of a shrug.

• Delivery to your door. Caregivers can bring it to you. That matters if you don't drive, if you're rural, or if getting to a store is a genuine hassle.

• You can grow your own. Patients may cultivate up to six mature plants and twelve immature ones.

• It's open at 18. You don't have to wait until 21.

Maine has no qualifying conditions list

That's the whole list. No medical records requirement, though bringing them can make the conversation easier.

Step by step
